4.1 Buffers & Ecosystem Services


Buffers perform ecosystem services that are valuable for society and landowners. Some services have markets such hunting and recreational leases based on habitat functions but many services are difficult to quantify and have limited or no current markets. Some services may develop into markets (e.g., water quality, carbon credits). Above are considerations for designing buffers to maximize ecosystem services.
